Mikala 'Miki' Marquez was born and raised in New York City as the middle child to Marco and Maria Marquez. It seemed like their family was destined to be artists. Their parents had both been dancers, Mimi loved dance, Miki loved to sing, and Mario, their younger brother, had a passion for jazz, and the saxophone to be specific. Her older sister, Mimi, was always her role model. Well, until she got into drugs, sex and the bad crowd. Miki never admitted how much respect she lost for Mimi, but it was quite a bit. When Mimi moved out at the age of 16, Miki was the one person in their family who felt abandoned.

Miki and Mimi were complete opposites. Whereas Mimi loved to be loud, Miki was quiet. Mimi wore her heart on her sleeves, and Miki locked herself in her room with her guitar and wrote. Mimi was a dancer, and Miki was a singer. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum, but there was nothing stronger than the bond of a sister. Their father, Marco, died when Miki was 15, and Mimi 18. They never made amends.

Miki followed in Mimi's footsteps, and moved out at the age of 16. Unlike Mimi, Miki didn't stick around. She packed up everything she had, which barely fit in a single suitcase, saved up as much as she could for a year and bought a ticket to Los Angeles. She performed at a few county fairs to get by, and even got the chance to make a few demo songs, but nothing went through. When the gigs ran out, she turned to the only person she knew was there: her big sister.
